Nino Farina in 2nd, spun and crashed while Fangio managed to escape the chaos. Those who were behind them tried to stop or avoid the carnage, but eight more drivers (from a field of 19 drivers) crashed and retired. None of them was injured.
In 1955, after leaving the tunnel, Alberto Ascari overshot the chicane to end up not only off the circuit but into water! Ferrari's first-ever world champion was lucky not to drown and was quickly carted off to hospital and soon after released.
However, four days later he was killed testing a sports car at Monza meaning his Monaco crash was his last moment of F1 action.
In 1965 Paul Hawkins crashed into the harbour after spinning at the chicane. He and Ascari are the only 2 drivers to have ever done this. He survived as well.
This is his car being fished out.
